In August 1942, the L-8, a U.S. Navy K-class blimp, took off from Treasure Island on anti-submarine patrol with two men on board. Five hours later, the blimp made an unscheduled landing in Daly City with no one inside. Author and journalist, John J. Geoghegan, recounts the story using rarely seen photographs and first person accounts to explain what happened.
A former Special Correspondent for the New York Times, John J. Geoghegan specializes in reporting on unusual inventions that fail in the marketplace despite being innovative. His Treasure Island talk is based on research he conducted for his recent book, WHEN GIANTS RULED THE SKY: THE BRIEF REIGN AND TRAGIC DEMISE OF THE AMERICAN RIGID AIRSHIP.
