In six dramatic minutes in June 1942, Admiral Chester Nimitz and the U.S. Navy reversed the course of World War II in the Pacific.

On Saturday morning of Fleet Week at former Naval Station Treasure Island, Professor of History Emeritus Michael Svanevik will speak on Admiral Nimitz and the Battle of Midway, regarded by historians as the turning point in the Pacific naval war.

Following Prof. Svanevik's lecture, RADM (ret) Sam Cox, director of the Naval History and Heritage Command, will speak briefly on the NHHC's efforts to preserve the Nimitz legacy and items of his in the Navy Archive.

From 12:30 to 3 pm, tours of the historic Nimitz House will be conducted by Rear Admiral John Bitoff, USN (ret), who lived in the house as Commander, Naval Base San Francisco from 1989-91.

After Pearl Harbor and other breathtaking military victories, Japan was intoxicated with feelings of invincibility. In June 1942, enemy forces maneuvered toward American-held Midway. Brilliant naval intelligence and the steadfast determination of Admiral Chester Nimitz altered the tempo of war, crippling invaders and taking to the offensive in the Pacific.

In 1963, Fleet Admiral Nimitz and his wife moved to Yerba Buena Island, where he lived the last three years of his life. The Nimitz House is one of eight surviving officers’ quarters, constructed around 1900, in the National Historic District on Yerba Buena Island.
