: UP UNTIL OCTOBER OF 1977, MARINES GUARED THE MAIN GATES AT TI. WE ALSO GUARDED THE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, AND A CLASSIFIED MATERIAL ISSUANCE BUILDING. I SPENT THOUSANDS OF HOURS GUARDING OUR BELOVED ISLAND. WHEN THE GOVERNMENT DECIDED THAT THEY DID NOT NEED OUR SERVICES ANYMORE, ALL OF THE MARINES STATIONED THERE GOT TRANSFERRED, MAY OF US TO OAKINAWA, JAPAN. I HAD THE HONOR OF BEING THE LAST MARINE ON DUTY AT THE MAIN GATE, AND THE ISLAND PUBLICATION TOOK A PICTURE OF ME HANDING OVER THE DUTIES TO A CIVILIAN SECURITY COMPANY. IF THAT PICTURE STILL EXISTS, I WOULD LOVE A COPY OF IT. WE SPENT MANY A FOGGY MORNINGS KEEPING THE ISLAND SECURE, AND WE ALL HATED LEAVING.
