My family and I moved to Treasure Island from Long Beach when my step-father (Senior Chief Alexander MacLean) was stationed there in 1974. We moved into the new Chief's housing and I remember watching the lights from Alcatraz flash around the walls of my second story bedroom every night, believing that I was the luckiest person on earth! I also remember watching the Marines jog around the perimeter of the island every morning and watching foreign ships moored in the bay through my binoculars and sometimes finding that someone on board was watching me too. I joined the Navy that same year and, though I kept a barracks on base, I most certainly DID NOT give up my room at home! I met my Marine Corps husband on Treasure Island (Lance Cpl Roy Timmerman) and we would have been married at the chapel on the island, but Patty Hearst had already booked the place for her wedding on the date we had wanted...April 1st! So, we settled for April 2nd and enjoyed the view from the Acey Deucy club for our reception. You know, some of my life's firsts were celebrated on Treasure Island and I only realize now, after all of these years, how fortunate I am to be able to say that I lived there!
